The Penn State Alumni AssociationWhat’s been happening: After leaving Happy Valley in 1971 I taught German and Humanities courses at the Beaver Campus of Penn State, moved on to Temple University where I worked from '73 to '83, was tenured, became chair of the Department of German and Russian, and then Director of the Master of Liberal Arts Program. In 1983 I moved on to Miami University as chair of the Department of German, Russian and East Asian Languages and I retired from Miami in July of 2005. My wife, K.E. Smith, and I now live and work part time in Portland Maine. My part time work is divided between the Maine Humanities Council and as of 2008 I am manager of a group of choirs known as The Choral Art Society. My years at Penn State from '69 to '71 were shaped by a wonderful group of professors and scintillating discussions with fellow students. Among the professors my 'Doktorvater' Rio Preisner will live in my memory forever, and Ernst Ebbinghaus, Joseph Strelka, Barton Browning, Manfred Keune and the ever gentle Stanley Townsend made my years in the German department a delight. In the English Department my mentor was the most original folklorist Samuel Bayard who shaped my professional life in ways I never expected. His inspiration led to my work in my last years of full time teaching when I developed a course in the European Tale tradition and garnered an NEH Institute on the Grimm tales in 2001. |
